Comparing my guesstimates on the Oscars...

Turns out that that up there is how you actually spell guesstimate, people. It's right there in the dictionary on my computer. Anyway, I only had eleven guess correct in the end (and completely left off a guess about the costume design winner. I mean, I didn't bother guessing on the Documentary, and Shorts categories, but those were deliberate.)

Visual Effects - What I predicted: Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
                           What actually won: Hugo

Sound Editing - What I predicted: Drive
                            What actually won: Hugo

Sound Mixing - What I predicted: Hugo
                            What actually won: Hugo

Best Original Song - What I predicted: 'Man or Muppet' from The Muppets
What actually won: 'Man or Muppet'

Best Original Score - Who I predicted: Ludovic Bource, The Artist
                                    What actually won: The Artist

Make-up - What I predicted: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Pt. 2
What actually won: The Iron Lady

Art Direction - What I predicted: Hugo
                          What actually won: Hugo

Best Editing -  What I predicted: The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
What actually won: The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

Cinematography - What I predicted: The Tree of Life
                                What actually won: Hugo

Foreign Language Film - What I predicted: A Separation
                                           What actually won: A Separation

Animated Feature - What I predicted: Rango
                                  What actually won: Rango

Adapted Screenplay - What I predicted: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
                                      What actually won: The Descendants

What actually won: Midnight in Paris

Best Director - Who I predicted: Martin Scorsese, for Hugo
Who actually won: Michel Hazanavicius, for The Artist

Best Supporting Actress - Who I predicted: Octavia Spencer, for The Help
                                            Who actually won: Octavia Spencer

Best Supporting Actor - Who I predicted: Christopher Plummer, for Beginners
                                          Who actually won: Christopher Plummer

Best Actress - Who I predicted: Meryl Streep, for The Iron Lady
                        Who actually won: Meryl Streep

Best Actor - Who I predicted: George Clooney, for The Descendants
Who actually won: Jean Dujardin, for The Artist

Best Picture - What I predicted: The Artist
                        Who won:

The Artist took home three big ones for the night, but Hugo made a big sweep of nearly everything else! I was happy to see Dujardin win over George Clooney in the Best Actor category, but disappointed The Tree of Life went home with nothing. I fully expected it to take out the Best Cinematography award. No love for Harry Potter either, which is a shame. I haven't watched the whole ceremony yet (still need to watch the Best Actor, Actress and Picture get presented) but as far as these ceremonies usually go, I found nothing to complain about. Billy Crystal wasn't too bad, though he could have been funnier. The speeches were mostly short and sweet (the only people to get cut off were the team behind the Best Documentary winner, Undefeated). I think my favourite moments were watching Octavia Spencer accept her award (she was just beautiful) and Christopher Plummer (I know Meryl made a beautiful speech too, but I haven't seen it yet). The Cirque du Soleil performance was spectacular!

  1. Kudos for predicting Streep, I was pretty surprised that Davis lost. I'm so ridiculously happy Dujardin won and that Uggie was there :)

    1. I think I've been predicting her since she won at the Globes. Davis was favourite there too, but Streep keeps getting the surprise victories this year! Uggie is adorable!

  2. I loved that Octavia Spencer won her Oscar and her gratitude was authentic. It was a given that Meryl Streep was going to win but still, I would have wanted Davis to win it.

  3. Ruth, I think you did much better with your selections than I did with mine. I guess I should have picked Hugo more often.

    1. Yeah, Hugo won a surprising amount in the crafts categories! Cinematography was a complete surprise to me (not that it wasn't good, but still...)

  4. The technical academy awards were here-there-and-everywhere, so nothing to be ashamed about, in terms of predicting those ( :

    1. Very true - I think I only went with Drive because it was it's only nomination, and I figured that it might win because of that. Ah well :)
