Sudden/half-asleep inspiration came to me the other night while I was watching The Wizard of Oz. From now on, I'm going to highlight some of my favourite 'musical moments' in film. And this doesn't mean simply 'musicals' (although that will probably be a big part of it). It could be a scene that uses music and sound really well, or in a memorable way. Suggestions and comments on what to look at are always appreciated. First up, the film that inspired the post:
The Tin Man has always been my favourite of Dorothy's three companions on her journey through Oz. There is something incredibly touching about his desire to be able to feel and love - to be 'kinda human' as he puts it. It's such a simple wish. It always brings a tear to my eye when the Wizard grants him this (in a manner of speaking) and says to him,
"Remember, a heart is not judged by how much you love, but by how you are loved by others."
Perhaps that statement is a little problematic now that I think about it (the kindest, most loving person may be, sadly, all alone) but there is a ring of truth here. Tin Man is loved dearly by all his friends, and frequently demonstrates his love for them.
Scarecrow, Tin Man and the Lion all sing about their wishes using the same melody, which lets it become a motif in a way. Tin Man also has (in my opinion) the best dance of the lot of them!
I just saw this movie a couple of days ago, on my birthday and I thought it was very sweet and cool, and the songs were very catchy! Great post!
ReplyDeleteYou know my fav, anything from Yankee Doodle Dandy. I also like the theme from 'Dances with Wolves'.
